JUMP START YOUR PRAISE - Psalm 103

The morning this summer when we packed up to drive our daughter to where she would be ministering for this coming school year,  we went to turn the key in our vehicle - and.... nothing!  The battery was dead - only clicking noises.  This was not real encouraging when we planned to drive a long way in the next few days. 

 

Thankfully, a friend was there with his car to give us a jump-start!  We connected the cables, and it started right up.  We disconnected the cables and the car ran on its own & ran well for the rest of the trip.  We just needed a little "boost" to get us started.   Praise God.

 

Do you ever feel like  your life of praise to God feels kind of "dead"?  You just don't feel like praising God?  Good news.  There is something that can give you a spiritual "jump-start."  Psalm 103!

 

Psalm 103 is such a  practical tool to help us to praise God daily - EVEN WHEN WE DON'T' WANT TO!  David himself, in the Psalm, is actually telling himself to praise God and reminding himself of the great reasons he has to praise God = all the cool stuff God has done! 

 

Please read through this Psalm and make note of the things that you can use to help get your praise going!  Especially notice the first six items in v.3-5.  Try using them today!

 

PSALM 103

1 ¶  Of David. Praise the LORD, O my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2  Praise the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits—
3  who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases,
4  who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion,
5  who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
6 ¶  The LORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.
7  He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel:
8  The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
9  He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever;
10  he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities.
11  For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him;
12  as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
13  As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him;
14  for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.
15  As for man, his days are like grass, he flourishes like a flower of the field;
16  the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
17  But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—
18  with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.
19 ¶  The LORD has established his throne in heaven, and his kingdom rules over all.
20  Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word.
21  Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.
22  Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

Introduction:  What do people want when they visit a church?

When most people were asked this question, they talked about a warm, friendly, respectful, caring welcome.  They look for an experience where people care about who they are.  Big churches can offer many things, but if you read the story below you will find out that in most churches this kind of welcome does not happen. 

 

How does your church rate?

A church newsletter mentioned a man who visited eighteen different churches on successive Sundays.  He was trying to find out what the churches were really like.  He said, “ I sat near the front.  After the service, I walked slowly to the rear, then returned to the front and went back to the foyer using another aisle.  I smiled and was neatly dressed.  I asked one person to direct me to a specific place: a fellowship hall, pastor’s study, etc.  I remained for coffee if served.  I used a scale to rate the reception I received.  I awarded points on the following basis:

 

10 - a smile from a worshipper

10 – a greeting from someone sitting nearby

100 – for an exchange of names

200 – invitation to have coffee, if served

200 – invitation to return

1000 – introduction to another worshipper

2000 – invitation to meet the pastor

 

On this scale, eleven of the eighteen churches earned fewer than 100 points.  Five actually received less than 20.  The conclusion: The doctrine may be biblical, the singing inspirational, the sermon uplifting, but when a visitor finds nobody who cares whether he’s there or not, he is not likely to return.

 

At the Payne Ave. Church we probably do better than this average.  But I want us to do better - to always strive to do better in this area of showing love to each other - both to those who are new and to everyone who comes here. 

 

In the past two weeks we've focused on the first part of our Purpose/Mission Statement, Loving God.  We've talked about learning to treasure Christ more in our daily lives.  Once we do that, we must work on the other part of Jesus' Great Commandment = to Love Each Other.  See below what we say is our purpose for existing as a church...

Our Mission:

    To make disciples of Jesus Christ
        on the East Side of St. Paul
            who love God,
                love each other
                    and love the world.

 

 “To Make Disciples of Jesus Christ...”

'Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I will be with you always, to the very end of the age.”'  Matthew 28:18-20

Mark 12:28  'One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"  29  "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  30  Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’"

Our Vision:

of noble birth. 27  But God chose the foolish
things of the world to shame the wise;
God chose the weak things of the world
to shame the strong.  28  He chose the lowly
things of this world and the despised
        things— and the things that are not—
            to nullify the things that are,
            29  so that no one may boast before him.

 It's amazing that God doesn't require us to be educated or popular or strong or wise...  His specialty is in changing ordinary sinners into His children - and showing the world through them what it means to know God.

Relationships within the Church

See the list of Bible verses below (at the end) that talk about how we area to treat One Another  (printed versions available at church)

“Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.” John 13:34-35

Relationships within the Church show if we are Jesus' disciples

How do you love new people?  Do you talk to them?  Ask them questions?  Invite them back?  Introduce them to other people?  Invite them to Sunday School or Small Group Bible study?

How Do you love the people here already?  Do you make it a point to sit by someone who is sitting alone during snack break time?  Do you seek to get to know others & include them in your circle of friends?  Do you notice when someone is standing alone?  Do you make phone calls during the week?  Do you pray through the prayer sheet?  Do you know everyone who is listed on the prayer sheet?

I know this can be a challenge because I am naturally an introvert.  Introverts like to stay to themselves.  They are sometimes afraid of others and therefore reluctant to reach out.  But even introverts are commanded to love each other and have gifts to share with others in the Body of Christ.  So, I challenge all of us that as we grow closer to God, we will have more love to show to each other.  And as we do that, the world will see that we truly are Jesus' disciples!

Thank you for how you do this already in so many ways!!!

 

 

The “ONE ANOTHER” verses  (NIV)

 

Romans 12:10  Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.

1Peter 2:2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good.

Mt 13:44  "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

 

A. Key Illustrations that help us understand why we should treasure Christ.

 

1. _Hunger

Mt 5:6  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

 Joh 6:35  Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry,

 

2. _Thirst

 

Joh 7:37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.

Psalm 42:1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

Psalm 42:2  My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Ps 63:1  O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water 

 

3. _Satisfaction

 

Ps 90:14  Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.

Ps 103:5  who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Eze 16:29  Then you increased your promiscuity to include Babylonia, a land of merchants, but even with this you were not satisfied.

 

 

4. _Money/Spending

 

 

Isa 55:1 ¶  "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2  Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.

Re 21:6  He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life.

Re 22:17  The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And let him who hears say, "Come!" Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life.

 

 

B. Applying it in real life:

 

1. Use your _physical desires as a reminder to pray for _spiritual satisfaction in Jesus.

*When you are hungry in the morning, ask God to give you that kind of hunger for Him.

*When you crave something in the middle of the afternoon, stop & ask God that He would be your spiritual satisfaction.

*When you are thirsty for something cool after a workout, or something hot when you are cold, or that coffee you like so much in the morning – ask God that He would help you DESIRE Him, long for Him, thirst for Him as much as or more than you do that drink.

*When you open the refrigerator or cupboard door to look for something to snack on or something to pack for your lunch, tell God you don’t love Him as much as food, but that you need His help to want that.  Tell Him you want to be blessed by hungering & thirsting after Righteousness.

 

 

2. Use your _refrigerator as a reminder that crave spiritual food.  Put up a _Verse!

From some of the above verses, make a sticky note VERSE to put on your refrigerator that talks about spiritual hunger and thirst!   

 

3. Choose a _substitute for this week!

If you had a room where you live that is pretty full already – and someone gave you a cool new couch, or a new TV w/ surround sound system…  If you wanted those things, you would need to make room for them.  Your room is already full, so something will have to go.  Would you be willing to trade the old beat up couch that’s falling apart for the new one?  Would you be willing to trade in your old analog TV for the new HDTV that someone gave you?    ARE YOU WILLING TO MOVE OUT SOME OF YOUR WORTHLESS “TREASURE” FOR THE TRUE TREASURE OF GOD?   What are you willing to “move out” so you can fit the BEST into your life?

 

Take a look at the items we have on the table in the hallway under the Treasure Poster.  Try using some of them as "substitutes" that will help you seek God more this week than you did last week.  Most of all, put the Bible into your daily schedule before TV, DVDs, music, computer, texting, reading, or anything you do on a regular basis.

 

May God let you "taste" that He is good and more satisfying than anything this life offers us!

BIG IDEA: This passage shows us why crossing barriers to tell people about Jesus is worth the risk and can be the joy of your life.

 

A. You are __Qualified:

1. You don’t have to know everything (v.9-26)

2. You just need to know a little about Jesus (v.29)

3. All you have to do is invite people to check Him out (v.29, 39)

 

B. God is ___Able:

1.  If we _invite people to check out Jesus, they will become _curious.

2.  If they get _curious, they will _investigate

3.  If they _investigate, they will _discover for themselves who Jesus really is

4.  If they find out who Jesus is, they will get _excited

5.  If they get excited, they will _talk about it too…

6.  BUT, in all this we leave the results up to God = we simply do the inviting & share our excitement over what we know…

 

C. So, get __excited   about evangelism like Jesus!

1. It’s better than _Food (v.32, 34)

2. It’s better than a _Harvest (v.35)

3. It’s better than getting paid (v.36)

4. It’s better than accomplishing great projects (36)

5. It’s worth the work (v.38)

 

D. Therefore, you should…

1. STOP WAITING, it’s ready NOW! (v.35-36)

2. GET OUT THERE – the JOY is waiting for you (v.37-38)

3. Realize there are people who are ready for the ­­­­­King & the Kingdom!

“I Could Never Talk to Him!”

BIG IDEA: This passage shows us how the choice to reject or believe in Jesus is made.

 

A. Two ways to apply this:

1. You have a choice to make

2. If you have chosen to believe, you have a choice to present

 

B. Things you need to realize in taking on this job:

1. It has high stakes (eternal life or eternal wrath - 3:36)

2. It's a process (like planting & harvesting – 4:35-38)

3. It's a discussion 

4. It gets risky

5. It gets pretty personal

6. It is life transforming

The story of Nicodemus shows us the kind of understanding and humility that is necessary for any person to be in the Kingdom of God (have eternal life).
 
What’s the Problem? Where does real belief/following start?
John 2:23-25 (the verses right before chapter 3)‏
23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the miraculous signs he was doing and believed in his name. 24  But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all men. 25  He did not need man’s testimony about man, for he knew what was in a man.
 
A. What do you think are Nicodemus' “Kingdom of Self” Issues?  
    = What would be hard for him to give up to follow/believe in Jesus?

1. How good he looked


2. How good he thought he was
 
 B. What are the Kingdom of God issues with which Jesus confronted him?

1. His need for a spiritual re-birth


2. Realizing only God could give him this, not himself
 
Did Nicodemus ever accept Jesus' offer?  Did he ever really believe = in a way that was demonstrated by real change in his life?
JOHN 7:50-52  Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier and who was one of their own number, asked, 51  "Does our law condemn anyone without first hearing him to find out what he is doing?" 52  They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Look into it, and you will find that a prophet does not come out of Galilee."
 John 19:38-39  Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. 39  He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.
 What’s the BIG IDEA for you?

1. Can you identify your Kingdom of Self issues?
2. Do you understand that your goodness won’t get you into heaven?
3. Have you been born again/from above?
  Have You Surrendered Your Kingdom to Join  HIS?
 4. Are you willing and able to tell people the truth they need to hear and not just be ”nice”?  (Jesus wasn't' 'Minnesota Nice')
 JESUS’ RESPONSE to people was based on their heart attitude.  If they were proud, closed to God and self-sufficient, then His approach to them was hard, strong and confrontive (like he was here with Nicodemus, and elsewhere to the Pharisees).  If people were humble, brokenhearted & open to God, then His approach to them was gentle, merciful and healing.
 
Where does real belief/following start?  With Repentant Humble Submissive Faith

BIG IDEA of this passage:  If we are to fulfill our role in history, we need to learn how to _TESTIFY.

 

In order to _Testify effectively, we must…

 

1. We must be clear about who we are = _Slaves (v.19-28)

 

2. WE must be clear about who Jesus is = _Supreme (v.29-34)

 

3. We must be willing for Him to get the _fame & the _following. (v.35-37)

 

ApplicationTo fulfill our place in history, we must learn to daily realign our _attitudes & apply the _Supremacy of Christ to everything we do.

15  John testifies concerning him. He cries out, saying, "This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’"

35  The next day John was there again with two of his disciples.
36  When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, "Look, the Lamb of God!"
37 ¶  When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus.

"To the Greek philosophers, the logos was the impersonal, abstract principle of reason and order in the universe." (John MacArthur John 1-11, Moody Publishers, 2006, p.16)

 

b)      How did the Jews use “Word”?

"THE WORD OF THE LORD was also a significant OT theme, well-known to the Jews."  (MacArthur, p.16) As shown in Creation being spoken into being, as "The Word of the Lord" coming to the prophets, the 10 Commandments being called literally the "Ten Words."

 

c)       What does it signify, then?

"To the Gks, then, John presented J. as the personification and embodiment of the logos. "

Just like Judge Judy is a no nonsense, straight-forward kind of person, so the Apostle John reports such an account of who Jesus is.  There is much controversy about Him, but John goes straight to the point to prove to you that Jesus is who He claims to be and that you cannot be neutral about Him.

1. What are some clues to the purposes of a book:

a) Look for repeated words

“Believe” = 98 times
“Life” 36 times
“Witness” or “Testimony” (nouns = 14x)‏
“Testify” = 33 times
“World” 78 times
“Light” 16 times
“Work” 12 times
“Jews” 59 times
“True/Truth/Truly” 62 times
“Miraculous Sign” 17 times

b) Look for what the author says is the meaning

John 20:30-31 “Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.”

>>Why were these specific things chosen by John?

So that you may _believe!

2. What is Unique about the book of John?

a) Very different than the “Synoptics”

This word “synoptic” comes from the Greek word meaning 'to see together' = refers to Matthew, Mark & Luke because of how similar they are to each other (how they 'see' Jesus' life) in time-line, structure & content.
About 92% of John is NOT found in the other 3.
Matthew has 42% which is unique, Luke 59%, Mark 7% unique to that gospel

  • John has no parables
  • No end-times teachings
  • No casting out of demons (or healing lepers)‏
  • No list of the 12 disciples
  • No story of Jesus' birth, baptism or transfiguration
  • No temptation by Satan
  • No prayer in Garden of Gethsemane
  • No ascension
b) Not many miracles = only 8. Only 2 of those are found in the Synoptics.

1) Jesus actual statement about “destroying the temple” (his body) is referred to in Mk.14:58, 15:29, but only in John is the event told (2:19).
2) John explains why the Jews needed to bring Jesus to Pilate (18:31 capital punishment)‏
3) John explains how Peter got into the courtyard of the high priest (18:15-16)‏
4) John tells how Peter, Andrew, James and John had previous contact with Jesus before they responded to his call in Mt. 4:18-22
5) John explains why Jesus sent the crowds away after feeding the 5000 (6:15 they wanted to make him king)‏
6) The birth narratives in Mt. & Lk. explain how the pre-existent “Word” had a human family

7) John introduces Andrew as Peter's brother (1:40) even though he had not mentioned Peter yet (= assumes knowing the Synoptics)‏
8) John mentions “the 12” (6:67) though they are not listed specifically in his book

e) John's Authorship
  • John 21:20-24 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, "Lord, who is going to betray you?") 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, "Lord, what about him?" 22 Jesus answered, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." 23 Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" 24 This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true.
  • John 13:23 “One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.”
  • = Present at the last supper = only the 12 were there (Mt. 26:20, Mk 14:17, Lk 22:14)‏
= He was an apostle
  • John 21:2 “Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Tiberias. It happened this way: Simon Peter, Thomas (called Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.”
= can't be Peter bec. They talked to each other 13:24,

 

  • Mt 17:1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves.
  • Mr 5:37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James.
  • Mr 14:33 He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.
  • Ga 2:9 James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship
  • “the disciple Jesus loved” would be one of the three (James died to early {Acts 12:2} to have written the book)‏
  • Many other outside sources attest to John's authorship

f) John's Personality

  • Mark 3:17 James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder);
  • Luke 9:49 "Master," said John, "we saw a man driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us."
  • Luke 9:52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them?"

Contrary to the image we may have of the "Apostle of Love," John probably had a strong personality which seems to be reflected in his clear "in your face" presentation of who Jesus is in this Gospel. You cannot be neutral about Jesus. The facts about Him presented in John force us to a decision: Is this true or false? Is Jesus who He claims to be? You cannot say he is a mere man or moral example. No "good" person would ever make such claims. He is God and we must believe in Him. The only other option is to reject Him. The Gospel of John shows us that choice in every chapter.

JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER - THE FIRST BILLIONAIRE: The very first person to reach the status of billionaire was a man who knew how to set goals and follow through. At the age of 23, he had become a millionaire, by the age of 50 a billionaire. Every decision, attitude, and relationship was tailored to create his personal power and wealth. But three years later at the age of 53 he became ill.  His entire body became racked with pain and he lost all the hair on his head. In complete agony, the world’s only billionaire could buy anything he wanted, but he could only digest milk and crackers. An associate wrote, "He could not sleep, would not smile and nothing in life meant anything to him." His personal, highly skilled physicians predicted he would die within a year.  That year passed agonizingly slow. As he approached death he awoke one morning with the vague remembrances of a dream. He could barely recall the dream but knew it had something to do with not being able to take any of his successes with him into the next world. The man who could control the business world suddenly realized he was not in in control of his own life. He was left with a choice.  He called his attorneys, accountants, and managers and announced that he wanted to channel his assets to hospitals, research, and mission work. On that day John D. Rockefeller established his foundation. This new direction eventually led to the discovery of penicillin, cures for current strains of malaria, tuberculosis and diphtheria. The list of discoveries resulting from his choice is enormous.  But perhaps the most amazing part of Rockefeller’s story is that the moment he began to give back a portion of all that he had earned, his body’s chemistry was altered so significantly that he got better. It looked as if he would die at 53 but he lived to be 98.  Rockefeller learned gratitude and gave back from his wealth. Doing so made him whole. It is one thing to be healed it is another to be made whole.

20 Symptoms of Financial INSTABILITY

1. You have difficulty reading your Bible or listening to a sermon because of your money worries
2. You make minimum payments on your credit cards and loans
3. You consistently think and worry about money
4. You've made impulsive purchases or expenditures you later regretted
5. In the past, you have used consolidation loans or second mortgages to relieve the financial pressures you were under and you're now in worse financial trouble than ever
6. You regularly pay monthly bills w/credit cards because you're broke (i.e. You know you have more month than money).
7. You don't faithfully give to the Lord because you think you can't afford it.
8. You argue about money.
9. You are angry, envious or jealous of others who have enough money to pay their bills or who are debt free
10. You have trouble sleeping at night because you worry about bills

   a) v.14 In your suffering, YOU’RE NOT ALONE –
     (1) Other Christians going through it too!
     (2) When you suffer for your faith, you join a great “group” of people who have also been hurt like you.
   b) Justice will come, you may see it very soon, or you might have to wait. (v.16)‏
B. Opponent Two (v.17-20) = SATAN

1.     Goal: To keep God’s people (workers) away from each other: 
People won’t grow in their faith. 
AND God’s workers won’t be filled with hope & joy or get their rewards.

2. Result: Nothing can keep the Word of God from encouraging & building up believers. 

3.    Encouragement:
    a) God WILL WORK powerfully to beat His opponent
           (1) His Word is not chained!   2Tim.2: 8
           (2) God will take the enemy’s own strategies and turn them upside-down!  (example: this letter)‏

He is not just a book or a program or a course. He is a loving God who loves us. We grow and mature as His children and He is committed to see us through that whole process!

What is the 'problem' in this passage?
Trying to make disciples in a way that’s not loving & sacrificial and speaking what needs to be said.

What is God's solution?
Give them your lives/souls, be committed to them. Don’t give up on them. Be up front with them.

How does this subject hit us? What need or problem does it address?
We as a church are in the process (as always) of trying to do a better job of making disciples. We may sometimes bemoan the fact that we don’t or cant’ do it as well as the big churches, when in fact, we have what it takes right here = it’s people caring about people. People who want to see others mature in Christ & become all they can be – to outgrow their sin and live the kind of life that the world will see and want. I want people to give themselves to this noble task.

(Example: Just look at our Sunday School teachers. They don’t do this simply because they need one more thing to do in their lives! They don’t do it because they get paid lots of money. They don’t do it because it is always fun. They do it because God has called all of us to make disciples on the East Side of St. Paul who Love God, Love Each Other and Love the World.)

Desired Response (How does God want us to think/do differently because of this sermon?)
That we realize we have what it takes to make disciples. It is not beyond our reach. It doesn’t take rocket science or a complicated scheme of things

(Example: We hope that Youth Group for this Fall is going to become something simpler and more basic. It is like this passage says – we want to pair up youth who are interested, with more mature Christians who will try to encourage them towards spiritual growth through friendship/mentoring.

How-To Steps (What suggestions will help us to be 'do-ers' of the Word this week?)

1. Work on becoming mature yourself so that you can help others grow up in their faith.

2. Get a person in your life that will help you spiritually. It’s great to have friends, but get yourself a friend who is a mentor that will help you grow strong in your faith, someone who can pour some of their mature spiritual life into yours.

3. Do something to help someone grow in their faith.

a) If you’re not ready to be a mentor, come and pray on Sunday nights – we want to pray according to God’s will – and we know it is His will that we make disciples. Come and ask Him to help us to that – to pray for children, youth, adults to grow in their faith – to become all God wants.

b) Let us know if you’re interested in applying for some teaching or leading position in the church & we’ll let you know what you can work on to make progress towards that goal.

c) Volunteer to work behind the scenes to help. E.G. In order for Diane to teach a Sunday School class, she needs some people to clean up after our snack time on Sunday mornings. If you can help do some very practical & simple things, you will be freeing others up to have more time to teach, lead & mentor.

d) Encourage. Say thank you to those who are serving, teaching, mentoring and leading you. Don’t take them for granted. Tell your kids to say thank you to their Sunday School teachers and to respect them. Pray for them.

e) If you are a discipler/mentor/leader/teacher, pray to have the kinds of qualities that Paul says he had with the Chtns in Thessalonica. Ask God to grow those qualities in you. Pray that God will fill you so much with love and enthusiasm and hope & wisdom for your fellow Christians that you will give your very life & soul to them. Be encouraged that YOU CAN MAKE (and are making) A DIFFERENCE in someone’s life.

If you don’t see instant results, that’s okay. Who of us has ever seen a kid grow into an adult in 3 weeks, or 3 months? So…

f) Don’t give up! Keep giving yourself to this noble job of making disciples who love God, love each other & love the world.

g) Ask yourself & God if you are doing everything you can be to be effective in this role.

h) If you are a parent, listen carefully to these qualities, they will help you become the best parent you can be. It’s never too late to learn new things. Ask God to give you the qualities you lack so you can help your kids follow Jesus. You can always be an example to them and speak the truth to them in love – even if you’ve made mistakes in the past.

Take the time to write down people in your life in whom you see or have seen God working. How often do you remember to thank God for these people or tell them you are praying for them? Don't forget the great people He has put in your life. Expect an attitude adjustment as you make this the focus of your prayer, even as Paul did.

v.1 _Clap
_shout to God with cries of _joy.
v.5 amid _shouts of _joy,
_sounding of trumpets.
v. 6 _Sing praises to God,

sing _praises to our King,
_sing praises.
v.7 _sing to him a psalm of _praise.


Why?
v.2 How _awesome is the LORD Most High,
the _great _King over all the earth!

v.1-8 God, You are _amazing, you gave us such great _victories!

v.9-16 But now you have _rejected and _humbled us

v.17-22 And this wasn’t even because of our _sin!

v.23-26 Oh Lord, _wake up/_rise up and _help us!


How can this apply to us?

1. What is it in your life that just doesn’t make sense to you?
2. Bring it to God like David did:
        a) Thank Him for the _victories you have seen.
        b) Tell Him the _troubles that plague & puzzle you now.
        c) Confess any _sin that could be part of God’s purpose for this problem.
        d) Call to God to rise up and _help you because of His unfailing love!

PSALM 44:1-8 (NIV)

1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.

FEAR or CONFIDENCE? Psalm 27

“FEAR or CONFIDENCE, which describes your life?”
June 17, 2007

1. The theme of the Psalm is _NO _FEAR ! (v.1)
Why? LIGHT, SALVATION, STRONGHOLD

2. Dangers & _Fears are REAL. But so is the _CONFIDENCE that comes from God (v.2-3)

3. You can get this Confidence in the FACE OF _FEAR by pursuing your relationship with God vigorously (_Seeking _God!) (v.4)

4. Why we can be fearless: God hides us in His secure _dwelling (hide-out) (v.5)

5. The confidence that comes from Seeking God first lets you see different things for your future: _Victory, _Joy and Enthusiastic _Praise (v.6)

6. The internal dialog of Fighting Fear: (v.7-12)
a). Realize God is telling you to _seek Him! (v.8)
b) _COMMIT yourself to Seek Him!!!
c) Cry out that He (1) won’t _hide. or _reject (v.9)
d) Remind yourself that God won’t _reject you (v.10)
e) Ask that He’ll (1) teach you His _way and (2) give you a straight path out of trouble (v.11), (3) not turn you over to whatever you _fear!

7. Realize that without the LORD helping you, you would be in _BAD/TOUGH/ROUGH shape!
8. Tell yourself and tell others that it’s worth it to _wait for God, TO _seek Him first (especially in fear), AND to build up your _CONFIDENCE in the Lord

When You Can't See God... Psalm 13

“Shining Light into Depression”

The 3 sections in this short Psalm show us a 3-step pattern for prayer when we are suffering:

1) v.1-2 Tell God how you _feel.
    a) How long will you _forget?
    b) How long will you _hide?
    c) How long must I wrestle with _depression?
    d) How long will the enemy _win in my life?


2) v.3-4 Tell God what you _want & the _reason why He should
    a) I need _ATTENTION & _ACTION
    b) I need _light, or I’ll die!
    c) If I lose, the Enemy will _boast
    d) If I fall, those who hate You will _rejoice


(In the first two, the emphasis is on the _reality of the pain and the _relief/rescue that is asked for in this dire situation. So, the emphasis is still on the desperate situation. That will now __change drastically in v.5.

3) v.5-6 Praise God for what He has done & _will _do = by faith!
    a) Trust is in God’s unfailing love
    b) Rejoice in Salvation
    c) Commit to Sing
    d) FOCUS on God’s _Goodness

Treatment for Anxiety
PRAY, THINK, DO
Based on Philippians 4:4-9

1. PRAY (v.6-7)
    a) Tell God exactly what you are feeling and what you think is causing your fear/anxiety/worry right now (v.6):
    b) Tell God specifically what you would like Him to do for you/in you (v.6):
    c) Start thanking God for anything He has done/given you (see if you can thank Him for 10 things!) (v.6):
    d) Ask God for His amazing Peace & Joy to replace your anxiety (v.4,7):

2. THINK (v.8)
    a) Ask God (& yourself) if what your anxiety is based on is actually TRUE:
    b) Choose to re place untrue thoughts with God’s TRUTH.
    c) What is something you know to be True? Noble? Right? Pure? Lovely? Admirable? Excellent? Praiseworthy?
Exercise your mind to focus on these things INSTEAD OF the things which are causing you anxiety:

3. DO (v.9)
    a) What things have you learned from the Bible that you know you should do, especially as it relates to your area of anxiety?
    b) Choose one and start DOING IT now:
    c) Ask God, the God of Peace, to walk with you through this as you obey (v.9):

PHILIPPIANS 4:4-9
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

    e) Fellowship with God means walking in the light (1:5)
    f) Fellowship with God means living in the truth (1:6)

2.    1:8-2:2 The importance of maintaining both _humility {not claiming no sin} and _confidence {in the forgiveness of Christ} in our relationship with God.
    a) We can't claim to be without sin (1:8)
    b) We can be forgiven, though (1:9)
    c) Again, we must not claim we have not sinned (1:10)
    d) The purpose of this letter (book) is so that WE WON'T SIN! (2:1)
    e) But if we do sin, we have someone who will stand up to defend us (2:1)

    e) if you claim to walk in the light, but HATE brother = still in darkness (2:9)
    f) But if love brother = live in the light (2:10)
    g) whoever HATES BROTHER is IN THE DARKNESS & walks around in it (2:11)

4. Summary: Walking in the _light will keep you from _hypocrisy, sin, _hate & stumbling in the darkness.

"Lame Faith Doesn’t Walk the Talk”

Intro Illustration: Fire Destroys, Sin Destroys - It defaces the image of God in us.

Like a burn victim whose face is being restored, the image of God is being restored in us by Jesus Christ.
What do you see in the MIRROR? If you don't see yourself as a sinner in need of change, you're not seeing the mirror (Word of God) correctly.

Why is this CHANGE important?
1. Because we are BORN spiritually to be NEW people. (1:18)

“He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.”

2. Because real religion involves controlling your mouth, helping others, and staying pure. (1:26-27)

If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."


3. Because real FAITH is always connected to ACTION = CHANGED BEHAVIOR. (2:17-19)

"In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do."


4. Belief without change is not the kind of FAITH that saves us. Example of Lame Faith: 2:19

"You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that— and shudder."


5. God's purpose in saving us is to RESTORE in us His image. (3:13-18)

"Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. 15 Such "wisdom" does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice."

What does it look like?
1. Listening more than talking 1:19
2. Being slow to get angry 1:19-20
3. Not treating some people worse than others (prejudice) 2:1-13
4. Controlled & Kind words 3:1-12
5. No fighting, quarreling or selfishness 4:1-6
6. Acknowledging God in all planning 4:13-16
7. No oppressing the poor 5:1-6
8. Patience, Praying & Praising 5:1-20
9. Turning back brothers who wander away 5:20
10. It looks like God 3:13-18

When we come to Christ, we come to the "Doctor" to be restored = changed! Anything else is not really faith.

I Peter 5:7, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

  • a Hebrew of Hebrews
  • in regard to the law, a Pharisee
  • as for zeal, persecuting the church

Many of these are athletic words that describe a strong focus, intent, energy that narrows down lifestyle choices in order to win the prize, the game, the contest.  Paul applies that to our lives.  Stop looking backwards & start moving forwards.  Live up to what you have learned and know already - and then keep pressing on & straining towards what God has called & chosen you.

From Danger #2 Focus your mind on Savior, not Stomach (3:17-4:1)

Our desires may be strong and pleasurable, but it is God who must control our lives and decisions/choices.  If we only follow our desires, they become our god.

From Danger #3 Focus your mind on the Gospel, not faults (4:2-3 )

a. That God has stopped _working in us thru the Holy Spirit

4. It is spiritually _dangerous to follow teachers, preachers, or authors who encourage us to enter into _practices which are not commanded or taught by Scripture.

(The above two passages point out something with which I have struggled: The danger of fearing, following or being loyal to personalities rather than Scripture. When we like or admire a person/teacher/author/friend, it is difficult for us to disagree with them. But we must realize that even great men like Peter & Barnabus were for a short time not acting in line with the truth of the Gospel. That is why Paul needed to confront Peter in Gal 2:11-14, even though he was an Apostle and Barnabus was a truly godly man. Both of them had powerful ministries & loved God. But this did not prevent them from being wrong and needing correction this one time. So also, we must be willing to compare what our favorite people say & write, to the authoritative Scriptures.  In Gal. 1:6-10, Paul says that they should not even believe him or an angel from God if what they say is not in line with Scripture.)

and I put on my feet the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
I take up the shield of faith, with which I can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.
I also put on the helmet of salvation for my protection
and I take as my weapon, the sword of the Spirit, which is Your Word.
Help me to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
Keep me alert and always praying for all my brothers & sisters in Christ.

1JN 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Light exposes our sin

Eph. 5:11 Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. 13 But everything exposed by the light becomes visible, 14 for it is light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

John 1:9 The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.
John 3:19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

We must come to the Light (Christ) to be exposed and forgiven

2Cor 4: 6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

JN 12:35 Then Jesus told them, "You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. 36 Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light."

After Christ cleans us, we then are able to reflect His light to the world

EPH 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light
MT 5:14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Are you willing to commit yourself to…?

1. Recognize God’s OWNERSHIP of all you have (Psalm 24:1)

2. Honor God with the FIRST of all you get (Prov. 3:9)

3. Begin giving at least 10% (Gen. 14:20, 28:22, Luke 21:4, 2Cor. 8:2)

4. WRITE down how you are spending your money ( REPENT where necessary) (Prov. 21:20, 23:4)

5. Make a SPENDING PLAN & start managing God’s money His way (Luke 16:10-13)

6. SAVE some money regularly for needs & emergencies (Prov. 6:6, 21:20)

7. Stop using CREDIT CARDS if you don’t pay them off every month (Prov. 22:7, Psalm 37:21)

8. Pay your DEBTS (Rom 13:7)

Are you willing to commit yourself to…?

1. Recognize God’s ownership of all you have - [So manage it well!]
(Psalm 24:1 The earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it)
See Luke 16-17

16:10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?


2. Honor God with the first of all you get

(Prov. 3:9 (NIV) Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;
Ex 23:19 "Bring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the LORD your God.
De 18:4 You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep,
De 26:10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, O LORD, have given me."
2Ch 31:5 As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the firstfruits of their grain, new wine, oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything.

3. Begin giving at least 10% (Gen. 14:20, 28:22)
Ge 14:20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.
Ge 28:22 and this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth."
Lu 21:4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."
2Co 8:2 Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.
Mal 3:10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.

4. Write down how you are spending your money (repent where necessary) (Prov. 21:20 In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.
Prov. 23:4 Do not wear yourself out to get rich; have the wisdom to show restraint. 5 Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.


5. Make a spending plan & start managing God’s money His way
(Luke 16:10-13)
10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own? 13 "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."
Prov. 27: 23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; 24 for riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. 25 When the hay is removed and new growth appears and the grass from the hills is gathered in, 26 the lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats with the price of a field. 27 You will have plenty of goats’ milk to feed you and your family and to nourish your servant girls.)

6. Save some money regularly for needs & emergencies
(Prov. 6: 6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! 7 It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, 8 yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.
Prov. 21:20 In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.)

Breaking Free From Financial Bondage - Part 3
"A Stronger Case Against Debt”
November 26, 2006

Sins that CAN surround Debt:
1. Greed
Mark 7:21 For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and make a man ‘unclean.’"
Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

2. Unbelief
Rom 4:18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be."19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead— since he was about a hundred years old— and that Sarah’s womb was also dead.20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why "it was credited to him as righteousness."

3. Selfishness
Ps 119:36 Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
Jas 3:14 But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth... 16 For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.

4. Impatience
Ps 37:7 Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Ps 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD; he turned to me and heard my cry.
Ro 8:25 But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.
Ro 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
1Co 13:4 Love is patient,
Ga 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, ...
Heb 6:12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.
Heb 6:15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
Jas 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.


5. Irresponsibility ("head in the sand" syndrome, thinking we can live above consequences)
Eph 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.

6. Misunderstanding what is Love
1Cor 13: 4 ¶ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love does not mean we have to buy our kids everything they want (with money we don't have).

Question: How does the Fruit of the Spirt affect our handling of finances?

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control.

If we are to handle God's money God's way, then we must use the Self-Control He gives us.

Two HUGE Lessons from Prov. 3:

1. Do you REALLY _TRUST_____________ God?

2. Then __HONOR______________ HIM with your money.

Three Keys for Handling God’s Money from Prov. 6

1. Get out of ___DEBT_____________ as soon as you can!

2. __SAVE________ __UP_____ for the future.

3. __WORK_______ __HARD_________, because being lazy will make you poor.

Proverbs 3:1-11 (NLT)

1 ¶ My child, {Hebrew My son; also in Pr 3:11, 21.} never forget the things I have taught you. Store my commands in your heart,
2 for they will give you a long and satisfying life.
3 Never let loyalty and kindness get away from you! Wear them like a necklace; write them deep within your heart.
4 Then you will find favor with both God and people, and you will gain a good reputation.
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.
6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths.
7 ¶ Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the LORD and turn your back on evil.
8 Then you will gain renewed health and vitality.
9 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything your land produces.
10 Then he will fill your barns with grain, and your vats will overflow with the finest wine.

Proverbs 6:1-11 (NLT)

1 ¶ My child, {Hebrew My son.} if you co-sign a loan for a friend or guarantee the debt of someone you hardly know—
2 if you have trapped yourself by your agreement and are caught by what you said—
3 quick, get out of it if you possibly can! You have placed yourself at your friend’s mercy. Now swallow your pride; go and beg to have your name erased.
4 Don’t put it off. Do it now! Don’t rest until you do.
5 Save yourself like a deer escaping from a hunter, like a bird fleeing from a net.
6 ¶ Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and be wise!
7 Even though they have no prince, governor, or ruler to make them work,
8 they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.
9 But you, lazybones, how long will you sleep? When will you wake up? I want you to learn this lesson:
10 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest—

1 Timothy 6:1-21 (NIV)

1 ¶ All who are under the yoke of slavery should consider their masters worthy of full respect, so that God’s name and our teaching may not be slandered.
2 Those who have believing masters are not to show less respect for them because they are brothers. Instead, they are to serve them even better, because those who benefit from their service are believers, and dear to them. These are the things you are to teach and urge on them.
3 If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching,
4 he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions
5 and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.
6 ¶ But godliness with contentment is great gain.
7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.

9 People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction.
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

How do we fit together the statements of our victory

with the facts of our struggles?

 

WHAT IS THE CURRENT STATUS OF OUR SITUATION?

v.18 “…our present sufferings”
v.20-22 “…the creation was subjected to frustration… the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay… the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth
v.23 “…we ourselves…groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons
v. 26 “…in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for…”
v.35-39 “..trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 “…we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered." {36 Psalm 44:22} … neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, …

WHAT IS THE EQUIPMENT GOD HAS PROMISED TO US?

v.1 “…no condemnation…”
v.2 “…set… free from the law of sin and death.”
v.9 “…You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit…”
v.10 “…yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness…”
v.11 “…the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you…”

v.16 “…The Spirit himself testifies…we are God’s children.”
v.26-27 “…Spirit helps us in our weakness… intercedes for us… the Spirit intercedes… in accordance with God’s will.”

V.21 “…the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.”
V.23 “…we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.”
V.25 “…we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.”
v.28 “…And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him...”
v.30 “And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”
v.38-39 “…neither the present nor the future, nor any powers… will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

WHAT IS 'IN PROGRESS' RIGHT NOW?

v.4 “…in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who… according to the Spirit.”
v.5 those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.
v.13 “..but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live…”

CONCLUSION:

Nothing the comes your WAY

will get in the WAY of God's great plan for you.

God will use the 'ALREADY' tools to get you to the 'NOT YET'
